How to make our cereals at home

Bake your own cheerios breakfast cereal

Making CHEERIOS® is actually so simple, you can do it from home with ingredients from your local supermarket.

For CHEERIOS® rings
5 tbspWholegrain oat flour* (dry ingredient)
2 tbspWheat flour (dry ingredient)
0.5 tspBaking powder (dry ingredient)
4.5 tbspWater (wet ingredient)
1 tspOil (wet ingredient)
0.5 tspSugar (wet ingredient)
2Pinches of salt (wet ingredient)
Slurry for coating
1.5 tbspSugar
1 tbspBoiling water
1 tspHoney
* If wholegrain oat flour is not available, make your own by milling rolled oats in a coffee grinder until it turns into flour



  1. Pre-heat the oven to 170°C.
  2. Sieve all dry ingredients into a mixing bowl.
  3. Combine wet ingredients together in a small cup, stir until sugar and salt completely dissolved.
  4. Add wet mix to the dry ingredients and stir with a spatula until no more lumps. Do not over mix. Rest the batter for 5 mins. Batter consistency after resting should be similar to peanut butter.
  5. Put the batter into a piping bag fitted with a plain nozzle, 3mm in diameter. Optionally, use a disposable piping bag and make a very small cut at the tip.
  6. Pipe rings the same size as CHEERIOS® onto a baking tray lined with non-stick paper.
  7. Bake at 170°C for 8-10 minutes.
  8. Allow to cool after baking.


  1. Mix sugar, honey and boiling water together until sugar is completely dissolved. Use immediately, or reheat in microwave for few seconds if cooled down.
  2. For every 50g of baked rings, drizzle ¾ teaspoon of the hot slurry.  Mix quickly until the rings are uniformly coated.
  3. Spread the coated rings on a baking tray lined with a non-stick paper.
  4. Bake at 120°C for 8-10 minutes until crispy.

  • Measuring spoons (1 tablespoon = 15mL, 1 teaspoon = 5mL)

    How can I find foods made with whole grain?

    Two things to remember: • Look for food labels where the word 'whole' appears in front of the name of the grain, like “whole wheat” or “wholemeal bread”. • For foods with more than one ingredient, make sure whole grain is listed towards the top of the ingredients list. The further up the list it is, the more whole grain has been used in the recipe. And look out for the percentage of whole grain. You should find this in the ingredients list too. It’s easy to know if a Nestlé breakfast cereal is made with whole grain: just look out for the Green Banner and whole grain tick on top of the box.

    Why does Nestlé label vegetable oil?

    Because it’s industry practice to label seasonal oils (oils that aren’t consistently available across the year). In Europe it’s now mandatory to detail the types of vegetable oils used in a food product. So it’s no longer permitted to use the term “vegetable oil” on a label.

    What should be in a complete breakfast?

    A complete breakfast should include a balance of nutrients from each of the major food groups. As a guide, it might look like this:

    • 1 grain-based starchy food
    • 1 dairy food
    • 1 portion of fresh fruit
    • 1 glass of water
    • Optionally, an additional source of protein Nestlé breakfast cereals are a nutritious breakfast choice as they are:

    • Low in fat (most have low levels of all types of fat, including saturates)
    • Fortified with vitamins and minerals such as B vitamins, calcium and iron
    • A lower calorie per kilojoule, fat and sugar choice than many other breakfast food options
    Do breakfast cereals contain too much saturated fat?

    No. Breakfast cereals aren’t a major source of saturated fats, and contain no added trans fats. Some grains, such as oats, can be higher in fats – but these are naturally present in the grain, and tend to be ‘good’ fats, not saturated fats.
